About the Festival

The 18th Norwegian Organ Festival
-in conjunction with the Nordic Church Music Symposium, 11th-21st September.
Our intention is that the two events will complement each other with the Scandinavian Church Music Symposium focussing on Scandinavian Church music and the Norwegian Organ Festival focussing on central European music and concentrated on the most important epochs and genres.
Taking part are the following leading artists and experts:

Professor Paolo Crivellaro, Universität der Künst, Berlin/Milano:
‘Classic Italian Organ Culture up to the 18th Century’.

Professor Harald Vogel, Hochschule für Musikk, Bremen:
‘North German Organ Culture up to the 18th Century’.

Professor Olivier Latry, The Paris Conservatiore/Notre Dame Cathedral:
‘300 years of French organ Music’

Professor Leo van Doeselaar, Universität der Künst/NL
 ‘Bach and his Circle’

Other contributors:

Ivan Sarajishvili, the new Cathedral organist in Stavanger, premiers a Norwegian Organ Festival commission: an Organ Mass by Magnar Åm.

Vidar Vikøren, Cantor at St Peter’s church in Stavanger, gives a concert lecture, presenting extracts from his doctoral “Bach and Musica Poetica”

Kolbein Haga plays Bach’s ‘Great Organ Mass’ from Clavierbüng III. A choir and solo instrumentalists also take part in the organ masses.

Masterclasses will take place in churches in the Stavanger area. The organs are selected for their appropriateness for the relevant repertoire, and also chosen for the convenience they offer for public observation of the teaching provided.

On Thursday 18th September, an Organ Safari takes participants to a wide range of instruments (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English, and Dutch) in the region. The instruments will be presented by local organists and organ builders involved in their construction.
The Scandinavian Church Music Symposium continues directly after the Organ Safari and continues until Midday on Sunday 21st September.

Welcome to a great Church Music event the like of which Norway has not seen before!

The Norwegian Organ Festival is given under the auspices of the Council of Churches in Stavanger.
In cooperation with:
Domkirken Musikk A.S. and local churches.
Our most important sponsors are:
